Midjiwan, the award-winning independent studio behind The Battle of Polytopia, has announced that its flagship title has surpassed 20 million downloads on mobile.
Midjiwan, the company behind Polytopia, is still a small development team based in Sweden despite the success of its flagship game, which gets frequent material upgrades and expansions via new in-game Tribes and skill trees. A percentage of each dollar earned from the game is put toward solar power projects, as well as other charitable and environmental endeavors by the studio.
The Battle of Polytopia offers expansions and cosmetics that players get to keep forever
The Battle of Polytopia, which debuted as a Flash game in 2016, has since grown into a popular independent Property with releases on Steam, the Nintendo Switch, and Tesla, as well as its own “Polytopia Store of Souvenirs” in Stockholm. However, The Battle of Polytopia has had the most success on mobile, amassing more than 20 million organic downloads across the Apple App Store and Google Play globally.
For a 4x strategy game, which often uses techniques seen in desktop gaming, Polytopia’s popularity on mobile devices is remarkable. Unlike with most free-to-play mobile games, Polytopia doesn’t use in-game currency and instead just offers expansions and cosmetics that players may retain forever.
Players are never required to make any purchases while playing the game because it is entirely skill-based. Both critics and players have praised the game, with users on Steam rating it as “Overwhelmingly Positive” and the International Mobile Gaming Awards giving it the “Excellence In Gameplay” award. Fans of Polytopia include well-known gamers like Mr. Beast and Elon Musk, and the game is even playable in all Tesla vehicles.
