GQEBERHA: JJ Smuts and Nicholas Pooran scored quickfire half-centuries and steered Durban Super Giants to a resounding 35-run victory over Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the fifth match of the SA20 here on Saturday.

Opting to bat first, the Super Giants finished at 225/3 in the allotted 20 overs, courtesy of a match-defining 100-run partnership between Smuts and Pooran.

Opening batters Quinton de Kock and Matthew Breetzke provided a decent start to the Super Giants with a brisk 58-run partnership.

Breetzke was the core aggressor of the stand while de Kock was rotating the strike until Marco Jansen got rid of him in the sixth over.

The left-handed opener scored 23 in 16 deliveries with the help of three boundaries and a six.

Breetzke then put together a brief 27-run partnership with Smuts and finally perished in the 10th over.

He smashed four boundaries and three sixes on his way to a 29-ball 43.

Smuts was then joined by Pooran with the scoreboard reading 85/2 in 9.2 overs and the duo soon turned the game on its head with belligerent hitting.

They added 100 runs in just 50 deliveries until Smuts’s departure in the 18th over.

JJ Smuts remained the top-scorer for the Super Giants with a 38-ball 75 which featured four boundaries and seven sixes.

Pooran, on the other hand, carried his bat all the way through and remained unbeaten on 60. His 31-ball knock included five boundaries and four sixes.

Pooran was involved in another crucial partnership as he added 40 runs with Heinrich Klaasen, who scored 13 off six.

Daniel Worrall bagged two wickets for the Eastern Cape while Jansen made one scalp.

Set to chase a mammoth 226, the Eastern Cape’s batting unit could score 190/9 in the allotted overs.

The home side had a shaky start to the run chase as they lost both their openers — Adam Rossington and Jordan Hermann — with just 13 runs on the board.

Skipper Aiden Markram and Tom Abell soon anchored the pursuit with a 93-run stand but both perished in successive overs and the Eastern Cape, as a result, slipped to 114/4 in 12.2 overs.

Abell remained the top-scorer for the Eastern Cape with 65 in 36 deliveries, laced with seven boundaries and two sixes.

The Eastern Cape then began to lose wickets at an alarming rate but Tristian Stubbs kept the scoreboard ticking singlehandedly before he too, perished in the final over.

Stubbs scored a gutsy 55 off 26 deliveries, hitting three boundaries and four sixes.

Durban Super Giants’ second victory in as many matches, soared them to the top of the SA20 standings while Sunrisers Eastern Cape remained at fourth with two points in as many matches.
